A SillyTavern character card is a PNG image with character data embedded inside it. The image itself is the avatar; the metadata inside the file contains the character's personality description, dialogue style, scenario setup, sample conversations, and behavior rules.

When SillyTavern loads a character card, it reads that embedded JSON and uses it to power the AI roleplay — the character knows who they are, how they talk, what their backstory is, and how to respond in-character.

The PNG character card format became the open standard in the AI roleplay community because it solves two problems at once: it's a portable single file that works across many platforms (SillyTavern, Chub.AI, Backyard.ai, RisuAI, etc.), and it's visually identifiable (you see the character's face when browsing your card library).

In the original open-source SillyTavern, you download a .png file from a community site (Chub.AI, Backyard, etc.), drag-and-drop it into your local SillyTavern instance, and it imports as a usable character.
